 Medicine Hat News GILLIAN SLADE gslade@medicinehatnews.com Man’s best friend, your pets, are loyal, unconditional in their affection and if you aren’t able to attend to their needs yourself, a special service can step in and even do the walking. Some animals thrive on tagging along on a vacation but for others, especially if you’re going camping, it might not be a good idea to take them with you. Some pets are happiest in their own surroundings at home anyway. Kim Unrau provides a “Critter Sitter” service either while you’re away or simply to help you give your animal the type of care you aren’t able to.“ Some animals have a very strict healthy routine and we can even stick to that while the owner is away,” said Unrau. “For others they can manage taking their dog for a walk in the evening but would like someone else to take them for a walk during the day.” After a client consultation, Unrau determines the owners’ requirements for their pet. “ Sometimes the animal is left inside the house and has to be taken outside at certain times, given food at a particular hour, with walks in between and then put to bed at night,” said Unrau put. The insured and bonded service has been available in the Hat for the last eight years or so and Unrau doesn’t mind the doggy walks whether it’s raining or snowing. The only time she doesn’t walk is during a thunderstorm. For the past five or six years Clement Laforce has used Critter Sitter to care for his sheltie, Jake, when he’s away.“ Jake doesn’t like going to a kennel,” said Laforce. “Kim really looks after him. He gets to stay at home and Kim walks, feeds and checks on him so we don’t have to be worried.” For Natasha Carvalho, Unrau walks her retrievers twice a week. “ When I get home from work and say to the dogs, ‘Was Kimmy here today to take you for a walk?’ their tails wag wildly in excitement,” said Carvalho, who says she and her husband both work full-time and it’s nice to know someone is walking the dogs when they’re at work.
